My kind, wise, and generous friend Susan Mead will be with us all this month talking four great words that will help you get in the true spirit of Christmas! I just know you’re gonna love her as much as I do!
According to HELPS Word-studies, hosanna is a transliteration of the Hebrew term (hôsî-âh-nā) meaning “Oh, save now!” or “Please save!”
The -na suffix in Hebrew expresses intense emotion. Strong’s Greek 5614
(hōsanná) comes from two Hebrew roots meaning, “Save now!” or “Save I pray!”.
In the Hebrew Bible, hôsî-âh-nā is used only in verses such as “help” or “save, I pray!” as in Psalm 118:25. Save us!
Of Hebrew origin (yasha’ and na’) means oh save! while hosanna (i.e. Hoshia-na) is an exclamation of adoration. Hosanna was originally a cry for help or happiness.
Hosanna!
Hosanna occurs 6 times in the Bible – even in The Message. I love the symmetry of God and His Word.
The first time we see the word Hosanna shouted is in Matthew 21:9.
The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Adoration. Do you hear it?
The beautiful word Hosanna, save us, we pray! echoes through the Gospels as Jesus enters Jerusalem one final time.
Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Yes, in the name of the Lord!
“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Adoration in the Highest Heaven indeed!
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
King…Royal adoration, save us, we pray!
Walk the Via Dolorosa in your mind. Envision the jubilant entry of a royal welcome for Jesus. Can you hear “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes” resounding? Simply savor the sacred air you breathe as you shout Hosanna! and celebrate the TRIUMPH of Jesus!
Would you throw your garments down for your King? Sing Hosanna!
The disciples went and did exactly what Jesus told them to do. They led the donkey and colt out, laid some of their clothes on them, and Jesus mounted. Nearly all the people in the crowd threw their garments down on the road, giving him a royal welcome. Others cut branches from the trees and threw them down as a welcome mat. Crowds went ahead and crowds followed, all of them calling out, “Hosanna to David’s son!” “Blessed is he who comes in God’s name!” “Hosanna in highest heaven!”
Yet the story continues…
But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
Indignant. Offended. Human. Jealous.
And there we are, separated from our God, by sin.
Psalm 118:25
Please, Lord, please save us.
Please, Lord, please give us success.
Hosanna! Please, Lord, please save us now, I pray!

I love this word, Hosanna! Beautiful words as we prepare our hearts for the reason of Christ’s birth.
Yes, indeed! Blessed Advent!
Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Lord! What I love about the word ‘hosanna’ is that even though we’re crying out for help it has a ring of praise.
Amen!
Thank you, Susan!
In all my years of praise songs and scripture reading, I never knew what Hosanna meant! My gosh, what enlightenment! What a gift you’ve given us today! I have a whole different idea of the depth of the praise shown in the donkey scene..bow down is right!
Wonderful look at the position of praise has in scripture. Should it have any less of a place in our every day lives? Thanks!
Most certainly not, Karen! Blessings!
