Masterpiece Monday - Sherry Stahl

I’m so excited for you to get to know Sherry Stahl a little better. Do you remember her from our first WORD Nerd Wednesday this year - Predestined? I think you’ll be so encouraged by how she uses her God given gifts and skills to make a difference right where she is! Not only is she a fellow self-admitted WORD Nerd, but she also shares a love of Ephesians 2:10 and Joshua’s memorial stones!

1. What special skills and abilities has God given you? How did you discover them? How are you using them to serve His creation?

God has gifted me with a friendly personality. I know you’re reading this and saying to yourself “WOW! She’s so lucky.” It’s not a very exciting gift to have, and wouldn’t seem like a “gift”, but I think it is after how God’s been using my “nice-girl” skills in the past few years . I’ve always loved meeting new people and hearing their stories. I’m usually the last person to leave church and only know it’s time to leave when they’re shutting off the lights. Recently I was asked about being a host on a television show (I’m still praying about it). The producer said that she has watched how I relate with people and felt that I had a disarming trait about me that made people feel good about themselves, comfortable to open up and share their stories with me. She remarked that I seemed to genuinely like people, and I do. God has been using this ‘skill’ of a friendly personality in my role as the VP of Operations for The Association of Christian Women In Music & Media (WIMM Canada). As an organization, we seek to provide an atmosphere where divine connections can happen to increase our impact for Christ. The C.R.I.E. of our hearts as leadership is to provide an atmosphere where women can CONNECT, be spiritually REFRESHed and INSPIREd with a time of media EQUIPping. We believe that out of this atmosphere will come divine connections, increasing our Impact for Christ.

Our ministry verse is Ephesians 2:10 which says, “I am HIS workmanship, made to do good work for HIS glory.” We believe that every woman who comes to our events has been formed by God to do something great for Him! In my role as VP I’m always meeting girls and finding out what they’re doing. Then I meet another girl and a chime sounds in my head that I need to connect her with another member working in the same media field. We’re seeing God do great things as women across Canada partner together in Kingdom work.

2) How do you ensure that you always give God the glory in your vocation?

How I have ended up in the ministry roles that I’m in could only be explained through God at work so I’m keenly aware of the fact that it’s all for His glory. I’m not doing what I’m doing because I’ve done everything right or because I’m anyone special. I’m a divorced, daughter of a mechanic. I wasn’t born of any royal lineage. I make it a matter of prayer to never forget this truth. I’m here, ‘but by the grace of God.

3) What MESSY struggles have you overcome along the way?

Since WIMM is a new organization, just under three years old, there have been many messy struggles we’ve had to overcome. The most monumental was in our beginnings. I had joined Christian Women in Media Association (CWIMA) in the US and they asked me to start running the organization in Canada. I partnered with Ann Mainse and we had an event planned at the studio where 100 Huntley Street and other shows are taped. While inviting girls to the event we found out that there was another group from out west called WIMM Canada that was having a meeting the month before ours. I was shocked to know that there was someone else doing the same thing. I immediately contacted the President of WIMM Hollie Sackett-Reid and explained the situation to her. I told her that I would cancel our meeting until we talked. I felt that since she and her group had already run a few meetings it would be wrong for us to move in and take over. Not the heart of Christ. When Hollie, Barb Dowling and I met we could see how God was orchestrating our meeting and the partnership with CWIMA; an established organization for Christian women working in the various fields of music, media and the media arts. We joined forces and are thrilled to see how God is expanding us across the country in such a short time.

4) Do you have any special MEMORIES you call on when you need to boost your confidence?

When ministry or life gets tough I open up my “Encouragements’ Binder. I’ve put emails, cards and comments from people who have been refreshed or challenged by something I’ve written or said. In that book are also written records of times when God confirmed His call on my life through scripture and the words of others. This book is like ‘memorial stones’ the Israelites set up to remember what God had done in the past.

5) What is your definition of success in your area of expertise?

Success to me comes in many ways. I feel excited when I connect women together and they go on to work together in media and/or ministry. A real sense of accomplishment comes over me when and event is over and all the hard work reveals itself worth it as women linger and talk about how much they need this group. Working as a female in media isn’t an easy path. It’s great to have support.
